BH Barn Event – Legacy Ranching Stewardship and Succession Across Generations

October 17, 2019 By

Burgher Haggard (www.burgherhaggard.com) and Excellence in Giving (www.excellenceingiving.com) invite you to join us for lunch at The Haggard Barn to welcome Donnell Brown and hear about the R.A. Brown Ranch story. Donnell is 5th generation to the R.A. Brown Ranch in Throckmorton, Texas, a family business in operation since 1895. He will share his thoughts of what they did along the way to keep the business in the family for over 120+ years and what opportunities/challenges are ahead of them still.

In addition to running a successful family business, Donnell has served in a Strategic Planning capacity for four different breed associations, as well as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.  In 2017 he served as President of the Beef Improvement Federation.  Donnell and his wife Kelli have both served as National FFA Presidents and Kelli also served as President of the Red Angus Association of America. They are blessed with two sons: Tucker and Lanham, both of who have joined them in the family ranching business. Together they are living their dream of raising cows, kids and Quarter Horses.

  • Parents of both families may not know each other well or come from different backgrounds & values
  • Large financial decisions need to be made in a short period of time
  • Bride/Groom Vision of event vs. Parents/In-law Vision of the event
  • “Who is in charge?”…and/or “Who is in charge of what?” Does $ = More Input?
  • How (and When) to approach topic of a Prenuptial Agreement
  • Breaking a Wedding Engagement

Transferring Family Wealth Intact to Future Generations

Transferring Family Wealth Intact to Future Generations – Dallas Estate Planning Council

Attendees will gain knowledge about the importance of planning to families seeking to transfer their businesses, wealth, and legacies to the next generation. The attendees will also learn about the role that communication and family education play in navigating the transition, and about the resources available to help families making this transition.  The panel will discuss the lessons they learned from their own experiences as members of families that successfully (and unsuccessfully) passed their businesses and legacies to the next generation. Clint Haggard, President of Burgher Haggard, comes from two 1850s legacy Texas families in Plano that both continue to control assets at a cousin’s level.  He worked for the family enterprise from 1993 – 2004 working his way up to CFO.  Since then, he has helped build Burgher-Haggard, a boutique professional service firm in Fort Worth that provides financial administration, reporting and consulting to families and closely held partnerships.  Currently Burgher Haggard has over 30 employees and over $3 billion in assets under administration. Clint has a BBA in accounting and finance from Tarleton State University, and an MBA from Texas Christian University.  Clint’s passion is helping other families through the journey of generational transition and control.  Doug Box is a Certified Family Business Advisor, author and public speaker based in Dallas, Texas.  He is a frequent presenter at family business forums across the country as well as a guest lecturer at several universities on the topic of family business. In 2005 he formed Box Family Advisors and began helping private families with succession planning, corporate governance, dispute resolution and family meetings. In September of 2014 year he published his first book, Cutter Frisco, Growing up on the Original Southfork Ranch.   In October of last year, he published a second book, Texas Patriarch – A Legacy Lost.  Doug brings personal experience to his understanding of family dynamics.  As the youngest of four sons, he grew up and worked in a family enterprise all of his life.  The Box Family controlled a number of public and private companies with interests in oil & gas, cement manufacturing and real estate.  Following his father’s sudden death and a litigious four-year family ordeal, Doug led the sale of the oil and gas concern known as Box Energy Corp.  Doug attended college at the University of Texas at Austin.  He received an MBA with honors at Baylor University and a Masters in Dispute Resolution from SMU.  He also holds the Certificate in Family Business Advising from the Family Firm Institute.
